Why we chose this centre:

  • Serves a population of 195,873 people (Insight Report Region 1.1)

  • Suffers from a critical 70% staff shortage

  • Located in an underserved area with limited shops, no grocery access, and very few services

  • Urgent need for specialist support, general staff, and physiotherapy services

A Full Tour of KizimKazi Health Centre:

What The Orange Trust will implement here:

  • Medical deployments: Our volunteers will work alongside local professionals, gaining unmatched clinical experience while serving the community

  • Training programmes & conferences hosted inside the centre

  • International exchange placements for UK/EU medics, students, and allied health trainees

  • Paramedic, sports medicine, and physiotherapy programmes, filling workforce gaps

  • Nexus-accredited training model, co-accredited with official bodies

  • Digital infrastructure projects, supporting future electronic health systems

  • Support services including cooking assistance, groceries, equipment supply, and village outreach

  • Remote radiology review by UK radiologists (planned)

Kizimkazi Health Centre will serve as:

  • The main medical base for all future deployments in Zanzibar

  • A training ground for medics, demographers, public health students, and international volunteers

  • A regional innovation point for digital infrastructure, data systems, and global health collaboration

  • A community engagement hub for outreach to surrounding villages

This is one of The Orange Trust’s largest long-term partnerships to date.

Key commitments from the Ministry:

  • Full governmental backing for our operations across Zanzibar

  • Official support for training accreditation for volunteers and medical personnel

  • Provisional licenses for UK medics and foreign professionals participating in deployments

  • Government-provided accommodation (up to 7 apartments) for our teams

  • Government-provided bus transportation for deployments

  • Ministry-appointed coordinator Dr. Hamid to support all collaborations

  • Shared mission to reduce 48% anaemia rate among pregnant women

  • Joint effort to address malnutrition and child mortality challenges

  • Encouragement for international professionals to collaborate and exchange knowledge with Zanzibar specialists

What this enables:
This partnership unlocks long-term, country-wide impact — giving us access, legitimacy, and the ability to scale medical outreach, training, and community health initiatives under full governmental support.
