Matemwe Region, Zanzibar, Tanzania
Matemwe is a coastal region in northeast Zanzibar, known for its rural villages and close-knit communities. With a population of approximately 2,833 people, the area is characterised by fishing, small-scale farming, and traditional livelihoods. Many families live in simple homes and rely on community support structures, making development projects highly impactful. The Orange Trust works closely with villages such as Mbuumaji and Pwani Mchangani within the Matemwe region to strengthen education, housing, and community wellbeing.
Our Support in Matemwe thanks to your donations
We constructed a community well, giving locals reliable access to water an essential need for daily life, education, and hygiene. As the next step, the village requires a water pump, which we are now preparing to assist with.

In these communities, we provided dozens of chickens and several sheep, enabling families to generate income through small-scale farming and livestock management. To improve housing conditions for vulnerable families, we supplied 11 zinc roofing sheets and 10 home doors, helping residents secure safe and dignified living spaces.

Through these initiatives, The Orange Trust continues to build resilience, dignity, and opportunity across Zanzibar’s rural communities — ensuring that families not only receive immediate support, but are empowered to grow and thrive for generations.
